What Do I Love?

What do you love?
This is a tricky question because there are many things I love. I love God. I love my family and friends. I love my girlfriend. I love food. I love helping others. I love music. I love being a bisexual. I love putting myself out there in the world. Most of all though I love doing well in school and achieving my goals. The reason I chose my major was because as a sophomore I went to Hawaii to take care of my cancer-stricken grandma. Seeing her so weak and in need of care made me realize I really love helping people and putting them first. I even promised my grandma that my end goal would become a doctor hopefully in pediatrics because I also love children. As a child the main way to gain my parent's love and satisfaction would be through doing well in school. Yes, it is kind of sad that the way to gain my parents' affection is through my achievements, but I have learned to achieve these goals out of my own volition rather than others'.

What do you want to do?
What I want in life first of all would be to graduate nursing school whether it be here at Lewis or even some other school. Second of all, I want to maintain a healthy relationship with my girlfriend because I think she is so special. Because of my past failed relationships I thought I would never be able to love again, but she makes me so happy. I truly believe things are different with her so I want to prove that this relationship will not be another failure on my part.Third of all, I want to be the best I can be in anything I do whether it be helping my friends or staying healthy and exercising. Also, I want to make my family proud of me, and work hard now so I can relax in the future. If anything, I am content with life now, and I want to do anything to keep it that way no matter the trials that come along the way.

What will you do to reinforce that tomorrow?
I really have to stop procrastinating. That will be the key factor in helping me do well in school. I also have to keep making my girl happy in my relationship. Other than that I will keep being there for my friends, and I will try to help them or anyone to the best of my abilities. Another way I can reinforce these goals would be to have an accountability partner such as my roomie. She already keeps me in check for going to classes and doing my homework so I am very thankful for her. Also, I believe a strong will, and prayer will give me the ability to reinforce my goals.

Should the U.S. lower the drinking age to 18?

I chose this topic because under-age drinking has been an ongoing problem in our country, and I believe that the U.S. should change the age limit because other countries allow 18 year olds and even younger ages to drink legally. I also come from a culture where drinking is a sport, and the Philippines do not have limits on alcohol consumption. I want to answer the question "Should the U.S. lower the drinking age to 18?" I chose this question because I believe that since you become a legal adult at 18 then the same should go for drinking alcohol. Many freshmen students and sophomores drink illegally which leads to trouble regarding school authority and the safety of the students. If the legal drinking age were lowered and monitored more carefully I think that many of the alcohol poisoning and drunk driving situations in underage drinkers can be lowered. I need to learn about the statistics of the alcohol consumption in individuals under 21 in other countries such as Germany or other countries and Europe as well as the U.S., and I would also have to learn about the attitudes and views on alcohol in both the U.S. and other foreign countries. The experts I would need to read from would probably be doctors, university administrators, and campus police officers who have dealt with kids and under-age drinking. They work at the hospitals, universities, and even local neighborhoods. These experts research the effects of alcohol on these under-age drinkers' health as well as the effects on their behaviors when under the influence of alcohol. The academic field would probably the medical field first, and then a psychological field.

Final Blog for WP2

Looking back at my previous blog for this writing project, I was supposed to write about communication technology used in the 1900s. I did not end up doing so, and instead I wrote about how technology plays a major role in society today. My original design plan purpose was to create an appreciation of technology, but instead my paper explains that our reliance on technology has become so great that a world without technology seems almost impossible. Instead of reflecting back on communications technology in the 1900s I wrote about the negative and positive effects of this technology on the workforce, society, medical field, and education. By basing off my own experiences with my iPhone, I tried to make my audience reevaluate their own relationship with communications technology. My experience writing this paper was a rough one because honestly I was struggling with personal problems while trying to write this paper. I have only written in APA format one time other than this paper so I did not have too much trouble with formatting. Formatting was probably my favorite part, but trying to synthesize the sources of my paper was probably the hardest thing to do. Although my paper is a little bit different than my original design plan and outline, I do like the route that I took with my paper because it applies to myself personally as well. I chose to write about both the negative and positive impact of communications technology because I truly think that this advancement can either better or ruin a person. For example, social media can sometimes ruin individual if they are not careful about what they post. Social media kind of ruins privacy nowadays because people frivolously post whatever they want to online without considering the possible consequences. I chose to incorporate the impact of communications technology on medical students because I am a nursing major, and I do believe that social media can have a positive or negative effect on my career and education. For example, if I was to post a picture of myself drinking online, and I was trying to apply for a job as a nurse then I probably would not get hired because my actions online show that I am not fit to be a professional. We do not realize that social media and technology really has a hold on our lives now because it is so natural to use now. I mean come on even 3rd graders have iPhones now. I did not get my first smart phone until I was a sophomore in high school! I believe I was able to accomplish the message I was trying to get across which was "Communications technology has impacted society, workforce, medical field, and education to a degree that we cannot live without it."

Blog for WP2

My topic that I chose for my blog is how technology plays a major role in communication around the world. I want to expand on the use of technology back in the 1900s as opposed to technology in the 21st century, technology and its effect on global communication, and technology on culture.
One of my sources that I found is called "Media and the City: Urbanism, Technology, and Communication." This source focuses on the ideas of urbanism and communication, and how they are synthesized in a sense. The way this source will help with my explanation is by giving an example of present day life and the way that technology impacts it. The second source I am using is called "Technologies of History: Visual Media and the Eccentricity of the Past." This source serves to explain my main point of technology and communication in the 1900s. This source can be summarized as a historiography of film, television, video games, and digital media. Communication is not just limited to talking over the phone; different ideas can be communicated nonverbally as well. Video games also communicate a message to the player. My second source is a Ted Talk on how Dawesar dealt with living during Hurricane Sandy, and its effect on the access to technology. My third source was "The Impact of Social Media and Technology on Professionalism in Medical Education." This source is supposed to exemplify how communications technology plays a role in education and work.

Explaining Zumba

So every Tuesday my friends and I have a tradition of going to zumba at 4:00. What is Zumba? Zumba is an exercise class which involves dancing and mainly cardio. The dances involve various Latin type moves as well as a mix of push ups, burpees, planks, and squats. Zumba involves different songs from cultural to the usual hip-hop as well as a variety of dance moves. If anything, I would summarize zumba as jumping and squatting half of the time. At Lewis, we have free zumba classes every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Usually these last four an hour or so, and the end result is your shirt being a whole shade darker then it was before you came to dance. My first semester at Lewis I would go to zumba classes like it was my religion. I was very fit, but when I came back my second semester I stopped classes. I finally came back in February, and I almost passed out from how intense the dances were. When I go to these classes I always have my roomie and my friends with me which makes it ten times more fun especially when my male friends can't do the more feminine types of booty shakes and body rolls. The main rule in zumba is "There are no wrong moves just accidental solos" which is very true on my part. Even some of the instructors mess up, and there are four of them! Sometimes I will just make up some of the moves when I cannot get the choreography, or my friends and I will just goof around and laugh at each other when we mess up. Many of the songs we dance to are by Jason Derulo, but most of the songs are familiar to me. As a result of zumba, I sweat buckets, and I get a great cardio workout while having fun with my friends. It is a win-win situation especially since working out can get tedious. I believe zumba is great alternative to the usually cardio workout on a treadmill, and it is lots of fun as well as satisfying. Even though I do not get all the steps correct and sometimes people step on my feet I disregard that because I go my hardest when I dance. As long as you have fun with it instead of thinking about how bad you look, then you can truly enjoy zumba to its fullest.

So originally my topic for this synthesis essay focused on music. In my original design plan I wanted to communicate to the audience that playing an instrument or listening to different types of music teaches an individual to pay attention to fine detail as well as broaden their musical spectrum. At first, I thought my topic was pretty cool until we had the first peer review. One of the girls who was in my group for the peer review was reviewing another classmate’s paper which was also about the same topic I had. The one comment she said was “Everybody does this topic. It’s so boring because everyone could do this.” After hearing this I felt so bad about my paper that I immediately changed my topic which was not an easy task. I spent the whole night trying to write another draft for the next class, but I was failing terribly until it hit me that I needed a solution to my stress in order to write this paper. That solution was comfort! Now my essay is on the topic of comfort and what comfort really means to me. In this essay I want to communicate to the audience that comfort has many forms and meanings to every individual whether it be food or music. Being in college and writing to an audience of college students, I know that we all have dealt with some sort of stress regarding our academics so I thought it would be fun to write about comfort in order to make me feel a little better about school. My experience writing this paper was pretty rough in all honesty because I had a hard time pushing myself to write, but it was a nice challenge I believe. I think I accomplished what I set out to do for this project except with a different topic. All in all, my experience was an interesting one indeed and stressful at the same time.
I believe many take the term "I love you" for granted now. I have so many guy friends who will tell me they love me just to get me to buy food for them. I also am guilty of taking those three words for granted at times. Being single I do not regularly tell someone I love them unless it's a family member of course, but if I did have a significant other would it be different when I tell them I love them? The thoughts that go through my head about these three words is when is the best time to tell someone I love them. Is there a time limit? Am I really in love with them? Or sometimes there are people who I will meet that are interested in me, and I will try to get to know them. Soon enough after maybe one month of knowing that person they will tell me they love me! Seriously?! That is way too early I believe, or maybe it's just me.

What does it mean when I say "I'm okay"?

Sometimes it means that I'm literally doing okay. Things are going well in life, and I'm not complaining. Sometimes it means that I don't want to deal with a problem so I'll just tell you I'm okay in order to keep my problems to myself. "Okay" is such a weird word in general I believe; you can be "super okay" or even "A-OK." It can also be used synonymously with the word "sure" or "all right." If I am in a good mood I will even say "okie" for slang. When you ask someone how they are doing you really need to take into account their voice, facial expression, and also their posture. Your "okay" may be different than my "okay." Not everyone is the same. As for me I will say I'm okay after I accidentally stub my toe on the dresser, or I'll say it when I just want to lie down on the couch and mope about a bad grade. "I'm okay" is such a broad statement so I am having trouble explaining it in all honestly. Like I said everyone's is different.

Memorizing a song on piano is like learning how to build a car. You have to run so many test trials until you can perfect the car; same thing with playing piano. You have to keep practicing and practicing until you get every detail of the song, and you can play every note. Practice makes perfect right? When you build a car you have to take every little detail into account. If there is a junky part then you have to fix it or replace it! When playing piano you have to pay attention to every expression and dynamic marking, there is so much technique involved that many non-musical people do not understand. I myself have been playing piano for 14 years now so I would say that I have quite a bit experience with the instrument. Also, I have competed in numerous Fine Arts competitions for piano duets and solos as well as being a church pianist. I remember when I would need to choose a song entry to compete with I would always take the longest time trying to pick a song. I mean there are millions! Also, there are millions of song composers to choose from. If anything piano taught me to pay attention to fine detail, and I can attest that memorizing Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 is like building a car.

So last Thursday we did another peer review, and I think going through another person's paper helped give me insight with my own paper. Also, it is nice to see other people's topics other than my own. I like that we can spend time in class doing group exercises because it makes this class less boring in all honesty. This class is way more difficult that College Writing 1, but I will just have to put in more effort really.

Currently I am in my college writing II class again, and I am blogging to pass time. We are currently doing an exercise in class, but being the studious student I am..I already did the exercises a week ago on accident thinking they were counted for an actually grade. Jamie is my classmate who sits next to me, and she is blonde. I am Asian so our skin color is very different; I don't know why this came to mind haha. I like the diversity in this class.

During my high school years, the upper class men would always take a trip to Wisconsin for a camp retreat. On the last day of the retreat we would always have a huge bonfire and sing gospel songs and give testimonies or confessions about what we learned during the week. What I noticed is that even though people would testify their plans of changing or fixing their lives, many of them did not actually do so. Some people are more concerned about their appearances rather than their own statements. I could also name some friends who said they would change their lifestyle and ended up acting worse than before. What I realized is that even the best people can make empty promises.
As a Filipino I eat a lot of Filipino dishes since both my parents like to cook. One of my favorite dishes most people don't know about is called "chocolate meat." Now what the heck is that? No, it is not actually chocolate-cooked meat, but it is pork cooked in pork's blood. Sounds delicious, right? Haha, not really, but like that famous phrase goes "Don't judge a book by its cover." I used to hate looking at the dish when my mom would cook it, but when I finally tried it I couldn't stop eating it. I think the meaning of the food to my culture would probably be "Make use of every part of the animal when you cook" or "Be creative when you cook." Who knows?
Living on campus I do not get to eat home-cooked food that often anymore. I honestly think I am suffering from rice withdrawals. I hope I can last the rest of the semester.
So when I was walking to my 10 a.m. class this morning I noticed the weather was fairly nice. Nice weather for Chicagoans is way different compared to people from California. Forty to fifty degree weather is frigid for Californians, and I just find it funny because I am perfectly fine with weather just above zero degrees. But who knows, maybe that's just me.

Currently I am still trying to finish an essay for my theology class, but I am failing terribly. I have three reasons for my failure. The first being my roomie is snoring very loudly so I cannot concentrate. The second being I keep getting distracted by Snapchat. The third and last being I have writer's block. Thankfully blogging has helped me take a mental break from trying to prove God's existence, and now I think I am ready to finish that essay. Goodnight!
Today I would say was a very eventful day. I was able to hang out with some friends after classes because it was my day-off, thank God. Even though all we did was watch funny Youtube videos and vape for a couple hours I still enjoyed that time. Also, I was able to hang out with a childhood friend of mine who goes to university down in Florida that I haven't seen in half a year. Today I would say was a good day, and I am very thankful indeed.

Today in my College Writing 2 class I learned how to define audience, genre, purpose, and voice of a specific prompt or phrase. I did not realize that defining the audience was so important for writing, and now I know that I should be more specific with the audience I am writing to. Depending on the audience I will have to write with a serious, happy, or even boring tone. Dr. Wielgos is really committed to helping us be more than just writers, but professional people. Because of this I am hoping that this class really gives me a better understanding of the writing scene.

What are our responsibilities to each other when we blog? Do we have responsibilities to others when we communicate?

Responsibility comes to play in many aspects of our lives such as school work, jobs, and even handling others. Responsibility in regards to communication also applies to blogging although it may not seem like it. Blogging is a public domain where others can read and share their thoughts or opinions, and one major responsibility to a fellow blogger would be to respect that person's writings. Everyone has his own viewpoints on certain issues so judging that person would be an irresponsible action. Also, sharing another's blog is also our responsibility because it gives that person's blog more recognition as well as popularity.

As for responsibilities when communicating to others, a major one would be being clear about what we are trying to communicate to prevent misunderstandings or even worse, online bullying. Sometimes a blogger's opinion may not be the same as another's, but that does not give the blogger the right to degrade or criticize another unless it is some form of constructive criticism. The last major responsibility we have while communicating to others is honesty.
